Scholar: Your School Life ("Scholar," the "App," "we," "us," or "our") is published and operated by Amy Lang. This Privacy Policy explains how information is handled when you use Scholar, including its widgets, Focus Timer Live Activity, study tools, and optional Scholar Pro features.

Scholar is designed to be local-first. The App does not require a Scholar account and does not operate a cloud backend for your classes, assignments, notes, flashcards, drawings, schedules, or study progress. That content is stored and processed on your device unless you deliberately export or share it.

1. Privacy at a Glance

  • Scholar does not sell or rent personal information.
  • Scholar does not contain advertising or third-party tracking.
  • Scholar does not include a third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDK.
  • Scholar does not operate an account, synchronization, or content-storage server.
  • School and study content is processed locally on your device.
  • Smart Schedule uses on-device rules and does not send your content to an artificial-intelligence service.
  • Scholar does not connect to OpenAI or ChatGPT while you use the App.
  • Apple processes App Store purchases, subscriptions, device backups, and other Apple platform services under Apple's own privacy practices.

For App Store privacy disclosures, information that is processed only on your device and is not transmitted to the developer is generally not considered "collected." This policy still describes that local information because it may be personal or sensitive to you.

2. Information Processed on Your Device

Scholar may locally process the following information when you choose to provide or create it.

Profile and preferences

  • Your display name;
  • An optional email address or other optional profile details, if entered;
  • Onboarding choices;
  • School hours;
  • Notification and haptic preferences;
  • Appearance and accessibility preferences;
  • Smart Schedule preferences;
  • Scholar Pro entitlement status; and
  • Other settings needed to personalize the App.

This information does not create an online Scholar account.

Classes, assignments, and schedules

  • Class names, teachers, rooms, colors, icons, and meeting schedules;
  • Weekly or rotating class schedules;
  • Assignment titles, linked classes, due dates, scheduled dates, estimated durations, and notes;
  • Custom calendar events, including titles, times, notes, colors, and icons;
  • Completion status;
  • School-hour settings; and
  • Smart Schedule work blocks generated from the information above.

Study and note content

  • Flashcard deck titles, descriptions, colors, icons, and class or assignment links;
  • Flashcard questions, answers, hints, and explanations;
  • Card status, review history, mastery, and study progress;
  • Flashcard, Quick Quiz, and Matching session results;
  • Study-session dates, counts, scores, and other progress information;
  • Quick Notes and sticky-note content; and
  • Study Board drawings, handwriting, colors, positions, sizes, and board settings.

Focus Timer, widgets, and Live Activities

  • Timer duration, remaining time, pause status, and completion state;
  • Next-class details such as class name, time, teacher, and room;
  • Upcoming assignment details such as title, class, date, and estimated duration; and
  • Limited study or review summaries used by widgets.

Scholar uses an Apple App Group to share only the information needed by its widget extension. Focus Timer Live Activities are updated locally and do not use remote push notifications.

3. How Scholar Uses Local Information

Scholar uses locally stored information to:

  • Display and manage your classes, assignments, schedules, notes, and profile;
  • Generate Smart Schedule work blocks on your device;
  • Link assignments, classes, and study decks;
  • Track card mastery, quiz results, matching progress, study sessions, and focus time;
  • Display relevant information in widgets and Live Activities;
  • Schedule reminders you have enabled;
  • Personalize colors, layouts, and app preferences;
  • Unlock Scholar Pro features when a valid App Store entitlement is present; and
  • Create exports that you specifically request.

Scholar does not use this information for advertising, data brokerage, cross-app tracking, profiling for commercial purposes, or automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects.

4. Apple Platform Services

Scholar uses Apple frameworks and services to provide native iOS features. Apple's processing is governed by Apple's own terms and privacy policies.

App Store purchases and StoreKit

Scholar offers monthly, yearly, and lifetime Scholar Pro options through Apple's StoreKit.

Apple processes your:

  • Apple Account;
  • Payment method and billing information;
  • Purchase authorization;
  • Subscription management;
  • Refunds; and
  • App Store purchase history.

Scholar receives only the StoreKit product, transaction, subscription, and entitlement information needed to complete or restore a purchase and determine whether Pro features should be available. Scholar does not receive or store your full payment-card number or Apple Account password, and purchase data is not sent to a Scholar-operated server.

Deleting Scholar does not automatically cancel an active subscription. Subscriptions must be managed through your Apple Account or App Store subscription settings. Apple may retain purchase records as required for accounting, fraud prevention, entitlement restoration, and legal compliance.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, Scholar schedules local notifications on your device. These may include:

  • A reminder approximately one day before an assignment is due;
  • A reminder on the morning an assignment is due;
  • A reminder for an assignment scheduled for a specific time;
  • A reminder for an upcoming work block or study review; and
  • A Focus Timer completion alert.

Scholar does not use a Scholar-operated push-notification server. You can change notification access in iOS Settings > notifications > Scholar and adjust available reminder preferences in the App.

Widgets and Live Activities

Scholar uses WidgetKit and ActivityKit to display selected information on your Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Dynamic Island. This may make assignment titles, class details, timer status, or study summaries visible while your device is locked. You control where widgets and Live Activities appear through iOS.

PencilKit

Scholar uses PencilKit for Study Board drawing and handwriting features. Drawing input and the resulting board data are processed and stored on your device. Scholar does not use PencilKit to send your drawings to us or to an external artificial-intelligence service.

System sharing and file export

When you export Scholar data or use the iOS share sheet, the export is created on your device and sent only to the destination you select. After you share or save an export, that copy is governed by the privacy and security practices of the selected app, person, or service.

Device and iCloud backups

Depending on your device and iCloud settings, Apple may include Scholar data in an encrypted device or iCloud backup. Scholar does not control Apple's backup process. Restoring a backup may restore Scholar data that existed when the backup was created.

Ratings

Scholar may ask iOS to display Apple's standard App Store rating prompt. Apple manages that prompt and any rating or review you submit.

For more information, see Apple's Privacy Policy and App Store & Privacy.

5. Artificial Intelligence and App Artwork

Some static artwork bundled with Scholar was created during development using OpenAI's ChatGPT image-generation tools. Those images are fixed app assets included before the App is distributed.

Scholar does not:

  • Connect to OpenAI or ChatGPT at runtime;
  • Send your name, classes, assignments, notes, drawings, flashcards, schedules, or study activity to OpenAI;
  • Ask OpenAI to analyze your content; or
  • Generate personalized AI content from your information.

Features described as "Smart," including Smart Schedule, use local app logic rather than a remote AI model. The use of ChatGPT to create bundled artwork does not cause Scholar user data to be shared with OpenAI.

6. Information We May Receive

Although Scholar's academic and study content remains on your device, we may receive limited information in the following situations.

Support, feedback, and privacy requests

If you contact us, we may receive the information you choose to provide, such as:

  • Your name and email address;
  • The contents of your message;
  • Screenshots or attachments; and
  • Diagnostic or app information you voluntarily include.

Do not include school records, private notes, or other sensitive content unless it is necessary for your request. Support messages are separate from the information stored inside Scholar unless you deliberately include that information.

Apple-provided developer information

Apple may provide developers with sales reports, subscription status, aggregated App Store performance information, and diagnostics made available under Apple's systems and your Apple analytics settings. Scholar does not embed a third-party analytics SDK to create its own user profile from this information.

7. Permissions

The current version of Scholar may request notification permission. It does not request access to:

  • Precise or approximate location;
  • Contacts;
  • Camera;
  • Microphone;
  • Photo library;
  • Health information; or
  • Apple's advertising identifier.

If a future version introduces a feature that needs another permission, Scholar will request it through iOS and explain its purpose. This policy will be updated when required.

8. Disclosure of Information

Scholar does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Information may be disclosed only in the following limited circumstances:

At your direction

When you export information, use the system share sheet, send a support message, or otherwise direct information to another person or service.

Through Apple services

When Apple processes purchases, subscriptions, backups, App Store reviews, notifications, widgets, Live Activities, or other platform functions as described above.

Legal and safety reasons

If we possess relevant information, such as a support email, we may preserve or disclose it when reasonably necessary to comply with applicable law or valid legal process; protect the rights, safety, or security of users or others; investigate fraud or misuse; or establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

Business transfer

If Scholar or its assets are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale, information we actually possess may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law and appropriate notice. This does not give us access to information that remains only on your device.

9. Advertising, Analytics, and Tracking

The current version of Scholar:

  • Does not display third-party advertising;
  • Does not include third-party advertising SDKs;
  • Does not include third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs;
  • Does not track you across apps or websites;
  • Does not access Apple's advertising identifier;
  • Does not sell personal information; and
  • Does not share personal information for targeted or cross-context behavioral advertising.

Scholar's current App Privacy manifest declares that tracking is not used and does not declare data collected by the App.

10. Data Storage, Security, and Visibility

Scholar stores local information in its iOS app container and, where necessary, in its restricted App Group container for widgets. These locations are protected by Apple's app sandbox and device security features.

No storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You should:

  • Protect your device with a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID;
  • Keep iOS updated;
  • Review which Scholar widgets and Live Activities are visible on your Lock Screen;
  • Protect exported files; and
  • Avoid entering information that you would not want another person with access to your unlocked device to see.

Because Scholar does not maintain an online account or content server, we generally cannot view, recover, correct, or remotely delete information stored only on your device.

11. Retention and Deletion

Local App data

Scholar data remains on your device until you:

  • Edit or delete an individual item;
  • Use an available reset or delete-data control; or
  • Delete Scholar from the device.

Deleting a linked class or assignment may remove its link from a deck while preserving the deck itself.

Deleting the App generally removes its local app-container and App Group data from the device. Copies may remain in an existing device or iCloud backup until that backup is deleted, overwritten, or expires under Apple's policies. Exported copies remain at the destination you selected until you delete them there.

Purchase records

Apple retains purchase and subscription records according to its own policies and legal obligations. Deleting the App or local Scholar data does not delete Apple's purchase records or cancel a subscription.

Communications

We may retain support, feedback, legal, and privacy communications for as long as reasonably necessary to respond, maintain records, prevent abuse, resolve disputes, and comply with law.

12. Your Choices and Controls

You can:

  • View, edit, complete, or delete Scholar content using the App's controls;
  • Export available Scholar data;
  • Reset onboarding or local settings where those controls are available;
  • Delete local Scholar data;
  • Disable notifications through iOS Settings;
  • Add, remove, or configure Scholar widgets;
  • End a Live Activity by ending or resetting the Focus Timer;
  • Manage or cancel a subscription through your Apple Account;
  • Restore eligible purchases through Scholar; and
  • Delete Scholar from your device.

Because Scholar does not maintain an online user account, we cannot provide a server-side copy of information that we do not possess.

13. Children's Privacy

Scholar is a school-planning and study app that may be used by students, including minors. It is designed to minimize collection by storing school and study content locally, avoiding behavioral advertising, and not requiring a Scholar account.

Scholar does not knowingly collect a child's school or study content on a Scholar-operated server. Children should not send personal information through a support message without permission from a parent or guardian where permission is required.

Purchases are handled by Apple and may be subject to Family Sharing, Ask to Buy, Screen Time, parental controls, and the Apple Account holder's settings.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has sent us personal information through a support communication, contact us so we can review and, where appropriate, delete it.

14. Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding personal information we possess, including rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to processing, withdraw consent, or receive a portable copy.

Most Scholar information is stored only on your device. The practical way to exercise rights over that information is through Scholar's edit, export, reset, and deletion controls. We cannot provide or delete a server-side copy of information we never receive.

For information we do possess, such as a support message, submit a request using the contact information below. We may need to verify the request and may retain information where permitted or required by law.

California notice

Scholar does not sell personal information and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not discriminate against users for exercising applicable privacy rights.

15. International Processing

School and study content stored in Scholar is ordinarily processed on your device. Apple services and any provider used for support communications may process information in countries other than your own under their respective terms, safeguards, and privacy policies.

16. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to Scholar, legal requirements, or our privacy practices. When required, we will provide notice in the App or through another appropriate method. The effective date at the top identifies the current version.
